Service

I view service as an integral part of faculty life, contributing to self-governing mechanisms in universities and within scientific disciplines, as well as in society. The following are highlights of my current and past service adventures!

In the Academic Community

At Penn State and in the College

  • Schreyer Honors College coordinator for IST—advising students toward undergraduate research.
  • Interim Associate Dean for Graduate & Undergraduate Studies (2014–2015).
  • Rock Ethics Institute Internal Advisory Board; University Open Access Task Force.

For Science

From 2010–2012 I served as a Program Manager in the U.S. National Science Foundation (Office of International Science and Engineering; Office of Cyberinfrastructure). During this time I traveled to Iraq to assist in a workshop to further develop science and technology policy, including the role of universities in training scientists and serving as centers for innovation and entrepreneurship.
